BOOK REVIEW OF - THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS BY ARUNDHATI ROY

If you crave to find myriad poetic lines among the pages of a novel, then you have landed in the right place, THE GOD OF SMALL THINGS, by ARUNDHATI ROY, is no less to any poetic perfection, which certainly deserves a booker prize for the immense usage of literature in a nuance and subtle manner.

My reason to pick this book was primarily due to the curiosity which I built when I was studying general knowledge and the question appeared asking who was the first Indian to win booker prize. ARUNDHATI ROY has carved out the true crux of the divergent aspects of society which she wanted to present through the plot she has created.

Summarised plot( spoiler free):

The story revolves around twins Esthappen and Rahel and Ammu (mother of Esthappen and Rahel)  and the chronicles which further lead into the plot. Ammu is a divorcee and later falls in love with a lower caste person called Velutha with whome Ammu shared her childhood. The stroy proceeds to find how Ammu's relations with Velutha has effected the kids, how Esthappen (a rape victim) resents to her life.

LOVE LAWS was the newer term which stood out from the content. ROY was sure to portray this term without any controversy and made this word pretty presentable. LOVE LAWS in this book refers to the various aspects of love which the author, explains as love between people without any boundaries, or hinderances from social or cultural status.

 Almost 2 decades after its original publication I still find this look pretty appealing to the

current situation prevailing in segments of India. I bet AYEMENEM the village around which the whole story evolves is perfectly described with excerpts from the people residing over there, and their mentality.

Many people tend to leave the book unfinished due to the reason  that the plot takes a very long time to fit into places.

The initial chapters are left with bizarre endings and a lot of information yet to be provided. Only almost in the middle of the book, you slowly understand the aspects the author is trying to put before us. Many times you would feel the narrative to be misleading and moving off the course, but I would highly suggest reading this book in one go so that this would persuade you to read further.

Appreciated aspects of the book:

1. High usage of appealing literature.

2. The plot majorly speaks about gender and caste discrimination prevailing in India, in a highly persuadable manner.

3. The ideologies of Marxism, communalism ,and understanding Fraternity were successful in actually implanting and kindling different perspectives into minds of readers.

Repelling aspects of the book:

1. The plot takes much time to take off

2. Due to extensive descriptions, the navigation drifts apart, leaving readers perplexed.

My rating to this book would be 4.6 out of 5
